Lost item horary: will I find it, and where is it?

124

You have checked every pocket twice. You have looked in the same drawer three times, as if the keys might appear on the fourth try.

Lost things are the oldest customers of horary. William Lilly's casebooks from the 1640s are full of them: missing rings, stolen linen, a strayed dog. The question is clear and the outcome is easy to check. You find it or you do not.

Which planets to look at

You are the ruler of the first house.

The lost item is your possession, so it belongs to the second house. Its ruler stands for the object. Lilly also treats the Moon as a general significator of lost things, so she gets a vote in every lost item chart.

If the item belongs to someone else, turn the chart. Your partner's wallet is the second house from the seventh, which is the eighth. Your mother's ring is the second from the tenth, which is the eleventh. Your child's phone is the second from the fifth, which is the sixth.

Signs you will find it

The second ruler or the Moon applies to your ruler. The item is moving back toward you. This is the main testimony.

you matter applying
Applying aspect. The two significators move toward each other. The connection is forming and the event is on its way.

The item's planet is in the first house, or with your ruler. It is close to you. Often it was never far: in the bag you already checked, in the car, under the thing it always hides under.

The item's planet is in an angle. The first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses are the strong places of a chart. An item signified there is usually near, and found quickly. In a succedent house it is a little further away; in a cadent house it is harder to reach.

Reception. If the item's planet sits in a sign ruled by your planet, it still belongs to you in a real sense. Reception helps even when the aspect is weak.

you matter mutual welcome
Mutual reception. Each planet sits in a sign the other rules. The two sides welcome each other, which softens the judgment even when the aspect is weak.

Signs it may stay lost

A separating aspect between your ruler and the item. The two have already parted.

you matter separating
Separating aspect. The aspect has already completed and the two move apart. What happened is behind you.

The item's planet is in the twelfth or eighth house, or badly afflicted. The twelfth is the house of hidden and lost things in the old texts. The eighth can show something that has passed out of your hands.

The item's planet is combust. Within about eight and a half degrees of the Sun, a planet is hidden by its light. The item is hard to see, or out of sight altogether.

A note on the void of course Moon. In most questions it means nothing more will happen. In lost item questions that cuts both ways: often it means the object is not going anywhere. It stays where it is until you look in the right place.

Where is it?

This is the part people love. The chart can give hints about the place, not only the outcome.

The sign of the item's planet describes the kind of place:

  • Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): near heat or a wall, the kitchen, a radiator, near electrical things
  • Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): low down, on or near the floor, under a rug, in a basement or the ground
  • Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): high up, on a shelf, on top of a wardrobe, in an upper room, hanging on something
  • Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): near water or damp, the bathroom, the sink, the laundry

The house of the item's planet narrows it down. The fourth is the home itself. The third can be a hallway, a short trip, or a car. The sixth is often read as a kitchen or workroom, the tenth as your workplace.

The tradition also gives directions. Fire signs point east, earth signs south, air signs west and water signs north. The houses do the same: the first is east, the tenth south, the seventh west and the fourth north. When sign and house agree, the hint is stronger.

Treat all of this as a search guide, not a map. It often lands surprisingly close. It does not land every time.

Lost or stolen?

Lilly handles theft as a separate question. There the thief is usually shown by the seventh house ruler, or by a planet with no dignity in an angle. These readings are hard and the margin for error is large. Never use a chart to accuse a real person.

How to ask it

Ask when you have actually looked and are genuinely worried. "Where are my car keys?" or "Will I find my silver ring?" both work.

Ask about one item at a time. If you lost a bag with your wallet inside, ask about the bag. Ask only once; asking again tomorrow because you do not like the answer gives an unreliable chart. More on this in how to ask a horary question.

Common questions

Does it matter how long ago I lost it?

No. The chart is cast for the moment you ask the question, not the moment the item went missing.

What if I find it before I read the chart?

Then the question has answered itself. Look at the chart anyway. Comparing where the item really was with what the sign and house said is a good way to learn.

Can I ask about a lost pet?

Yes, but small animals belong to the sixth house, not the second. A pet is treated as a small animal in your care. The same logic of applying aspects and angles then applies.
