When will I get married? What a horary chart can say

17

Most pages that answer "when will I get married" work from a birth chart. They look at transits, planetary periods and a window of years. Horary works differently. It needs no birth time at all. The chart is cast for the moment you ask, and it answers the question you actually asked.

Marriage is one of the oldest horary topics. William Lilly gives it a long section in Christian Astrology (1647), and the questions in it sound much like the ones people ask now: will I marry, will I marry this person, will the match go ahead.

First, ask a question the chart can answer

"When will I get married?" is a hard question for horary. It assumes the answer is yes and only asks for a date. The chart works best with a clear outcome to judge, and timing then comes out of that judgment.

These work better:

  • Will I marry this person?
  • Will I get married in the next two years?
  • Will he propose?
  • Will the engagement go ahead?

If you ask about a specific person, the chart is about the bond with that person. If you ask in general, it is about marriage as such. Both are read from the same houses. More on wording in how to ask a horary question.

Which planets to look at

You are the ruler of the first house, with the Moon as your co-significator. The partner, or the marriage itself, is the ruler of the seventh house.

Lilly also uses natural significators. For a woman asking about a husband, the Sun is added to the picture. For a man asking about a wife, Venus and the Moon are. These do not replace the house rulers. They give a second witness.

Signs that the marriage happens

Your planet and the seventh ruler apply to each other. The aspect has not completed yet, so the event is still ahead. A trine or sextile describes an easy road. A square or opposition still brings the matter about, but with friction along the way.

you matter applying
Applying aspect. The two significators move toward each other. The connection is forming and the event is on its way.

Reception. If one significator sits in a sign ruled by the other, it receives that person. In plain terms, it wants them. Mutual reception, where each sits in the other's sign, is one of the strongest positive testimonies.

you matter mutual welcome
Mutual reception. Each planet sits in a sign the other rules. The two sides welcome each other, which softens the judgment even when the aspect is weak.

Translation of light. The two significators have no aspect, but a faster planet leaves one and goes straight to the other. Someone or something carries the matter between you: a friend who introduces you, a family member who pushes it forward.

The Moon applies to the seventh ruler. The Moon's next aspect shows where things are heading. If she goes to the partner's planet, the matter moves toward union.

Signs of delay or a stop

Saturn touches a significator. This is the classic sign of delay. The matter takes longer than you hope, or it moves through duty and obstacles. It is not a no by itself.

Another planet gets there first. If a third planet aspects one of the significators before they can meet, it cuts the union off. In marriage questions this is often a family objection, a former partner, or money.

you matter third steps in
Prohibition. A third planet gets there first and completes its aspect before yours. What you wait for is blocked by something you did not expect.

The aspect is separating. If the significators have just parted, the moment between them is behind you. For a question about a specific person, this is a hard sign.

The Moon is void of course. She makes no further aspect before leaving her sign. Lilly's reading for most questions is that nothing comes of it.

How timing comes out

Timing in horary comes from the aspect that brings the matter about. Count how many degrees are left before it is exact. That number is then turned into a unit of time.

The unit depends on the signs and houses the significators sit in. Cardinal signs and angular houses run faster. Fixed signs and cadent houses run slower. Mutable signs and succedent houses fall in between. So 5 degrees can mean 5 weeks in one chart and 5 months in another.

Marriage is a slow matter, so the unit usually comes out in months or years. If the result makes no sense for your life, for example 5 days for a wedding with no partner in sight, the larger unit is usually the right one. Timing is the least certain part of any horary judgment, and it should be read as a rough window, not a date to plan around.

Common questions

Can I ask "when will I meet the person I marry"?

You can, but it is a different question. Meeting someone is not the same event as marrying them. Ask "will I meet someone in the next year" if that is what you want to know, then ask about marriage once there is a person.

What if I am already in a relationship?

Name the person in your mind and ask "will we get married". That is a cleaner question than the general one, and the chart can speak to the bond itself. If the relationship has ended and you want to know whether it can start again, read will my ex come back.

Can I ask again next month?

Only if something real has changed, such as a proposal, a breakup or a move. Asking the same question again because you did not like the answer gives an unreliable chart.
